Vintage Wodaabe Textile of Niger - 41" x 28"

<p>These rectangular textiles are made for and used by the Wodaabe people of Niger. These rectangular textiles are used by women as a wraparound skirt. This diaphanous cloth is first woven of very fine threads in narrow bands, then sewn together sided by side into a larger cloth before it is dyed indigo. The intricate embroidery is then added to the corner as a way of individualizing and embellishing the skirt.</p>

D.R. Spetka first lived in Africa for a year before officially opening The Niger Bend in 1982.During the first 20 years of that time, D.R. Spetka traveled extensively in West Africa. However, since the early 2000’s, he decided to expand his traveling to East Africa and Southeast Asia.
