This is one of many very characteristic baskets the Mossi people of Burkina Faso make and use commonly. The square bottom and round top are typical of this long-standing tribal tradition. This type has flared sides and is decorated around the top with leather and cowrie shell trim. It also has a single cowrie shell at each of the bottom corners as "feet". This same style of basket comes in a variety of sizes and decorative configurations. This one is among the smaller of the genre.

This unique and perfectly cast brass balafon player and balafon is very typical of the workmanship of the Mossi brass casters of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. They continue to employ the lost wax brass casting technique typical among many African peoples. Every piece is first molded in wax, covered with a mud/sand investment, baked until hard and the wax melts out, then the molten brass is poured into the mold which is broken off to reveal the artwork of the casters. This elaborate textile features supplementary weft patterns throughout. This cloth is very well used and has all the signs of such use: stains throughout and a large torn hole near one end. These medium wide beaded leather bracelets are among the most common made in Mali, where they make a wide variety of this type of bracelet. Contemporary African brass mask with a loop on the top, allowing it be hung or worn as a pendant necklace. This pendant was made by the ancient traditional lost wax casting process where the object is first shaped of bees wax then covered with a sand &amp; clay investment. This unit is dried and then baked so the investment hardens and the wax runs out leaving the space into which the molten brass is poured. Once cooled the investment is removed, broken off, never able to be used again, to yield the object so cast. Every single object of this type, no matter how small, is made this same way, one by one, by hand. As a result of this handmade process each pendant is unique although the design of all is very similar; each pendant has small differences. This mask measures: 3 x 2 x 3/8" (7.6 x 5 x 1 cm)

This hand-carved ebony bust is of a woman of the Fulani tribe in Guinea, West Africa. This pair of saint figures are angels although their wings have been lost over time. You can still see where they were attached to the backs of these beautiful original figures. All such figures were originally acquired by individuals for inclusion in their homes’ private shrines in Viet Nam. In almost every part of Asia it is customary for families to have a religious shrine in or right outside of their house. Since most people in Asia are Buddhist or some other non-christian religion, most shrines are Buddhist. However, Catholics have similar corresponding shrines. If a family is relatively poor their shrine - be it Buddhist or Catholic - will be a small corner of a room in their house. The wealthiest people have entire rooms devoted exclusively to their shrines in which case for Buddhists it’s a temple in their house; for Catholics it’s a chapel. Most people associate Catholicism in Viet Nam with the French colonial period, which is very much the case. However, Jesuits from all over Europe brought Catholicism to Asia 500 years before that. The Catholic tradition in Viet Nam and all the other Catholic populations of Asia is well established. The Catholic population of Vietnam is only about 8% of the total but that is about 7 million people. During certain periods of their history Catholics have been some of the most influential people in the country. One of the largest concentrations of Catholics in Viet Nam is in the province of Nam Dinh, a short distance south of Hanoi, on the coast. Although we are unable to trace the origin of all the saint hands and heads we have there is a high probability that they come from this area. We purchase these from dealers in Hanoi. Those dealers purchase them from dealers who are resident in the provinces. We have no way to ascertain the age of each piece but we are confident that, conservatively, they are at least 50 years old. They could very easily be much older; there is absolutely no doubt they are authentic, vintage Vietnamese Catholic shrine objects. We have a full range of Vietnamese Catholic ecclesiastical material: full saint figures in all sizes, crucifixes, tabernacles, shrine enclosures, ecclesiastical textiles including chasubles. This cowhide shield was made in Kenya by a Maasai artisan, following traditional practices but was kept in a storage facility for some years during which it became rather "distressed". It maintains its character as an important part of the accessories of a Maasai warrior. The stand on which this shield was photographed is NOT included in the sale of this shield.
