Wilma Glodean Rudolph was an American sprinter born in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee, who became the first American female runner to win three gold medals in the Olympic games.
Wilma Rudolph faced poverty and polio as a child and was born prematurely. But she overcame her disabilities to compete in the 1956 Summer Olympic Games, and in 1960, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics. She was nicknamed "Skeeter" for her famous speed.
